Over the past century hundreds of millions of people have migrated to the world’s cities looking for a better life. Some find it, though many simply exchange rural poverty for urban poverty. Today, over one billion people live in slums. That’s one out of every six people on planet earth. By 2030 that number will have doubled to one out of every four. According to some United Nations projections, 50% of the world’s population may live in urban slums by 2050. That’s serious! So serious that the World Bank says that “urban poverty will be the most significant, and politically explosive, problem of the 21st century.”
Aside from global pandemics such as AIDS and influenza outbreaks, clean water and clean technology, terrorism and crime, rampant urbanization is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century and of our generation, precisely because the urban poor are most vulnerable to all of the above. In fact, there are clear links between urban poverty and pandemics, terrorism and crime and those links are becoming more evident by the day. The way we respond to it will largely determine the future of our world.
Transformación Urbana Internacional (Urban Transformation International) was formed as a response to this new reality. We’re united in a belief that the injustice, poverty and spiritual emptiness in urban slums have reached such enormous dimensions that we simply can no longer look the other way in the vain hope that this situation will go away all by itself.
That’s why our mission is to create and then transmit a reproducible model for holistic urban transformation that can be adapted, reproduced and multiplied by many other organizations and social actors in Mexico City and beyond. Through this we hope to holistically impact and change the lives of many slum dwellers for the better.
It’s an impressive task. That’s why we need you!
